Going Deeper 1/11/19

The Gospel reading for Epiphany 1...
Luke 3:15-17, 21-22   As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, "I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.  His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." ...  Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove.  And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased."

With the coming of the messianic forerunner known as John, followed closely by the arrival of the long-awaited and much-anticipated Messiah Himself, known as Jesus, everything changes!!   The history of the whole world changes.  And both the history and the direction of our lives change.

Understood through the lens of the Gospels, we now see that God's plan all along has been to heal what sin has broken and to do so through the coming and growing of His Kingdom on earth.  God had promised that through the descendants of Abraham all of the nations of the world would be blessed.  It has taken a while.  There have been a whole lot of twists and turns, ups and downs, steps forward and falling backward, but with the coming of the Christ/Messiah everything changes.

We are in the story.  It is vitally important we understand that the "Divine Drama" which unfolds throughout the Scriptures is a story we do not merely observe, but a story we join.  This beloved Son of God came to change everything and everyone... and that includes you!  He came to reconcile you to your Abba/Father by the laying down of His life.  As a gift, you are now a child of God.

But the gifts continue.  Jesus calls you to follow, to change the direction of your life away from self-centered pursuits and join Him in changing the world through the coming and growing of His Kingdom.  So stay tuned... stay in the story.  Listen for His calling.  Seek His Spirit.  Everything changes when everyone changes... for the good!

With You in Him,
